Located in the northeastern part of the U.S., New York State is bordered by Canada to the north and west, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east, and New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south. At 19,651,127 (2013 U.S. Census Bureau), New York is the third most populous state in the country.
Albany is the state capital, while New York City is the largest city, not just in the state but in the whole country. Other cities in New York State include Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, Syracuse, Albany and New Rochelle. As one of the world’s premier cities, New York City enjoys a global reputation and tends to overshadow everything else that the state of New York has to offer. Not only is the city the financial capital of the world, it is the home of the United Nations, one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world, and the headquarters to 54 companies on the 2014 Fortune 500 list.
Prospective students will discover that there is more to New York State than New York City. For one, more than half the state is covered by forest. The state is also home to the Niagara Falls, another hugely popular tourist attraction.
Higher education in New York is coordinated by the New York Office of Higher Education and overseen by the University of the State of New York, an entity that covers all education in the state, from prekindergarten through to college. There are two public systems – the State of New York public university system and the City of New York system – as well as a wide array of private universities.
