Montana

Often referred to as ‘Big Sky Country’, Montana is famous for its vast plains that stretch across the eastern part of the state and the numerous mountain ranges in the west. Montana's diverse geography covers more than 147,000 square miles, making it the fourth largest state in the nation. However, with a total population of 1,015,165, it is one of least densely populated states in the country.

MontanaMontana shares borders with Canada to the north, Idaho to the west, Wyoming to the south, and North Dakota and South Dakota to the east. Helena is the state capital, while Billings is the largest city. Other cities include Missoula, Great Falls, Bozemand and Butte.

Agriculture is an essential part of Montana's economy, contributing over $2 billion dollars to the state annually. There are 2.6 million beef cattle in Montana and about 18,000 dairy cows. Montana ranks sixth in the nation for sheep production. Tourism, timber and mining are the other major sectors. Major attractions in the state include the Glacier National Park, the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, and Yellowstone National Park.

The Board of Regents governs the Montana University System, which comprises 16 universities and colleges, enrolling more than 47,000 students each semester. Among them is Montana Tech University, which was featured in the 2015 edition of the Princeton Review of ‘the best 379 colleges’ in the country.
