Located in the northeastern part of the country, Maine is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and south, New Hampshire to the west, and Canada to the northwest and northeast. Nearly 90 percent of the state is covered by forest, which explains why Maine is also usually referred to as the “Pine Tree State”.
Maine has a total population of 1,328,302 (2013 U.S. Census Bureau estimates). The state capital is August, while Portland is the largest city. Other cities include Lewiston, Bangor, South Portland and Auburn.
Maine's economy is largely anchored by agriculture and fishing. Manufacturing is also another major sector. Key industries include paper, lumber and wood products and ship building.
The University of Maine System is the state’s largest provider of higher education with an annual enrollment of nearly 40,000 students.
