Writing a solid professional resume is an important skill to have whenever applying for jobs. The best resume will get you noticed, facilitate an interview, and in the end lead to your being hired. Here are some essential tips that will help you write an effective and unique professional resume.

  • Begin with an objective. To write a clear and strong resume, you need to edit each one you submit so that it is relevant to the position for which you are applying. To do this, you need to develop a strong objective that clearly communicates to the employer what position you are applying for and why. Having a good objective is important, as it it is the first thing the employer reads about you.
  • Look at the job description. Review the job description, and pick out important keywords that you can incorporate into your resume. Many corporate employers use digital databases to search for applicants using specific keywords. Don’t let your resume be weeded out”use keywords!
  • Research Resume Examples. Looking at sample resumes can help you generate ideas for your own resume, also giving you an idea of what is acceptable for inclusion in a resume.
  • Get organized. Before starting your resume, organize all of your information to make sure you have a good design, structure, and above all clarity. Create an outline, clearly distinguishing separate sections for contact information, objectives, job experience, education, skills, and awards.
  • Select an attractive format. Use creativity when formatting your resume, incorporating bold and italicized fonts or bullet points to highlight key information. Also, break your content into short and concise lines instead of long, wrapping paragraphs.
  • Use a standard font. Generic fonts such as Arial or Times New Roman make your resume easy to read. Especially with electronic submissions, don’t experiment with decorative fonts, as the text may not transfer correctly. An employer can’t select your resume if he or she cannot read it!
  • Follow punctuation and capitalization rules. Make sure you use punctuation and capitalization correctly. If you are not sure, refer to a reference guide for assistance.
  • Never use the word I. It is generally not a good idea to ever directly refer to yourself in a resume. Instead, begin every sentence with a powerful verb, such as implemented, organized, or directed.
  • Remain consistent throughout your resume. As with indentation, consistency is important when formatting dates, headers, and more. For example, do not format one date as 2012 and another as 8/29/2010.
  • List information from newest to oldest. For previous work experience, always start with the most recent job first. If not relevant to the current opportunity, you do not need to list all of your work experience.
  • Be descriptive with titles. When listing the titles, you want to make sure to grab the attention of the reader. Instead of using just one word, be as explanatory as possible to give the employer a good idea about the nature of your past experiences.
  • Emphasize your strengths. Concentrate on your strong points. If your job experience is not very great, talk about the significant leadership roles you have held or volunteer work you have done. Also, instead of creating a long list of qualities, connect specific traits with real life or work experiences.
  • Show off your accomplishments. Accomplishments are personal aspects that make you as a person unique and interesting. Highlight achievements that demonstrate your professional skills and relate to the job for which you are applying. Also, explain how these skills will benefit the company.
  • Take time to proofread and edit. To ensure that your resume looks professional, take the time to proofread various times and extensively edit.
  • Get help. Ask a colleague or friend to read over your resume and provide critiques. There are a variety of great online tools and resources that will walk you through each step of the resume-writing process and provide assistance for all sections.
